I decided to head down Thomasville Road for lunch and grab a sandwich at Po’ Boys Creole Cafe. I arrived a little before noon and found a table. The waitress came over to grab my drink order and I decided to get some fried pickles. While I waited for the pickles to arrive the restaurant began to slowly fill up. The crowd was a mix of business people on their lunch hour with a sprinkling of college aged kids.
The pickles came out and I placed my order for a buffalo style shrimp po’ boy. The Po’ Boys on Pensacola Street was the first place I had fried pickles when I moved to the South. The portion was enough for two and I enjoyed the dipping sauce that accompanied the them.
I anticipated that my sandwich would be out shortly after my pickles but I was wrong. I waited, and waited, and waited. 45 minutes passed as I watched people who had placed their orders after me get their orders, eat and leave. I stopped the waitress twice to see what was going on and was assurred my food “would be right out.” She lied.
After almost an hour of sitting in the restaurant the po’ boy emerged from the kitchen. Since it took a ridiculously long time to make I expected it to be the best, most carefully assembled and plated buffalo shrimp po’ boy in the history of po’ boys. The shrimp was nicely cooked and season and the bread was fresh. While it was good it was not wait-an-hour good. The worst part that no one apologized for the poor service or offered an explanation. Needless to say, I will not be back to Po’ Boys anytime time soon and the next time I have a craving for cajun food I will head elsewhere.
