The Original Christo’s

I arrived in Sanford and drove up 1st Street looking for a place to have lunch.  After making a loop I parked near the courthouse and made the short walk up to the Original Christo’s.  I had noticed several groups of people heading in the door when I drove past and decided to check out a place that the locals visited during their lunch break.

Upon entering I asked the hostess if I could sit outside.  She looked at me like I was crazy but I wanted to take in downtown as I ate.  Plus, when seated directly under a fan the heat was bearable and a welcome change after four plus hours of ice cold A/C on the drive down from Tallahassee.

I looked over the menu as the waitress brought me a huge glass of ice water with a lemon.  They had sandwiches, salads, hot dogs and various appetizers.  I decided to order the Chicago Beef sandwich.  The waitress asked if I wanted fries for an additional $1.95.  I took a pass and told her to give me the chips.

A few minutes later my sandwich arrived.  It consisted of thinly sliced bottom round beef dipped in au jus topped with red wine marinated mushrooms and baked with brick and mozarella cheese.  Sitting on the plate next to the sandwich was a pile of plain ridged potato chips, an orange slice and two green beans.

The inclusion of the two string beans struck me as odd. I picked one up and took a bite.  It was chilled and had been marinated.  It was actually quite pleasent and I wished there were more on the plate.  The chips and pickle were ordinary.

As for the sandwich, the bread had a nice crispness to it on the outside while the inside was soaked with au jus.  The meat was tender and had a very good flavor to it.  The red wine marinated mushrooms were very good and went well with the melted cheese and beef.  It was a very good sandwich and I can see why there was a steady stream of patrons entering the Original Christo’s while I enjoyed my meal.
