Delicious Chopped Pork from Smoakies Bar-B-Que

Travelling back from Fayetteville, Georgia I saw a sign for Smoakies Bar-B-Que in Cordele.  I pulled off I-75 South at Exit 102 and took a right towards downtown. The road deadended and I was fairly certain I had gone the wrong way.  A quick call to the restaurant confirmed my suspicion and I headed back towards the highway.

With some quick directions I quickly found the restaurant.  Smoakies is about a mile down the street on a spit of land that juts out between two roads.  The sign that declares its presence is longer than the building and from the outside it looks like a small converted gas station.

However, as the saying goes you cannot judge a book by its cover, and Smoakies Bar B Que falls into this category. Smoakies is a mom and pop operation and upon entering I was warmly greeted.  Their customer service was as sweet as their tea, and while chatting with the lady who manned the rear counter I looked over their menu.  I ordered a 1/2 pound chopped pork sandwich, fries and a sweet tea.

I sat at a table and waited for my order.  While I waited I sampled their sauces.  There was a tomato based rib sauce (good), a spicy mustard based sauce (excellent) and a mild vinegar based sauce (good).  As I was sampled their sauces the server/hostess brought me over a huge to go cup of sweet tea.  I took a sip and it was sweet without being syrupy.  Perfect.

A few moments later my order was ready and I was on my way towards the door.  The lady who assisted me stuffed a large wad of napkins in my hand with a smile and told me I as going to need them to avoid getting sauce on my white dress shirt.  I love South Georgia.

Before pulling out of the parking lot I opened up the paper sack.  The pork sandwich was huge and wrapped in wax paper.  It was doused with a good amount of sauce and I sampled the pork.  It had an excellent smoked flavor and was very moist.  A bite confirmed that it is some of the best chopped pork I’ve had in recent memory.

By the time I had eaten my sandwich (and amazingly avoided getting any sauce on me while driving) my fried were cold.  I did not care as I had just devoured an excellent pork sandwich.

  1. I just read about this place on a blog called The Grit Tree a couple of weeks ago and I am really looking forward to trying it. I’m glad that it gets thumbs up from you as well! I hope to get down here in December.

    • Thanks for reading my blog and I am glad you enjoyed the review. I wish I had not been in a hurry to get home as I would have loved to try their other meats. Sadly, I am a slob and eating ribs in the car was not an option. Let me know how your visit goes!

  2. I live in Cordele and I have to say that Smoakies is one of our FAVORITE restaurants in town! Steve, the owner, always greets everyone with a smile and the rest of the staff is just as friendly! A must try is DEFINITELY their ribs! They are absolutely THE BEST EVER!!! Even my 3 year old has requested Smoakies on several occasions. I highly recommend Smoakies to anyone looking for a great BBQ restaurant!!!
