I pulled out of my grandparent’s driveway and by the time I filled the gas tank little man was out in the back seat. He slept until we reached Cross City, Florida. By the time we hit Fanning Springs he was hungry and asked for something to eat. I asked him what he wanted and he told me a hamburger.
I was not sure where to stop when I spotted Chompers Drive Thru Diner. I hung a u-turn and pulled into the parking lot. Chompers is a locally owned diner that serves burgers and other road food delicacies.
A small mustard colored building with a drive thru on each side occupied the read of the lot. Inside the building were a few tables. In the interest of time I decided to get out meals to go.
I pulled up to the window and was greeted. I ordered little man a burger, fries and a Sprite. I went with the mushroom swiss burger, fries and a coke. Our food was cooked to order and I pulled up to the next window and waited. A few minutes later I was handed two white paper bags.
Before pulling onto the road I handed little man his food. I decided to start with my fries. They were shoe lace in design and piping hot. The outside was crispy and the inside was chewy. Little man agreed as he gave a “mmmmm” and “these are good daddy” from the back seat.
My mushshoom swiss burger was served on a large fresh roll. I kept it half in the paper to keep the mushrooms from sliding out and landing on my pants. There were a lot of mushrooms on the burger but it lacked in the swiss cheese department. Regardless, it was a very tasty hamburger and I will definetly stop by Chompers the next time I am making a road trip down U.S. 19.
