Since Coosh’s Bayou Rouge relocated from Kerry Forest Parkway I have wanted to visit its new location. As lunch time approached Joe and I ventured to the Cajun spot to see if the bold flavors of Louisiana had found a home in the Florida Panhandle.
Coosh’s is located in an upscale plaza on Thomasville Road. Arriving we found ample parking available out front. The restaurant is clad in a mix of brick, stucco and stone. Large plate glass windows face towards the parking lot. Coosh’s marquee complete with fleur-di-lis hung above the double front glass doors.
Coosh’s menu is large and lists pages of appetizers, Cajun specialties, pasta, BBQ, burgers and wraps. I was in the mood for a muffaletta which are served in quarter, half, or whole sized sandwiches. Each muffaletta is filled with salami, ham, provolone, Swiss cheese, and an olive tapenade on Italian bread. I ordered the quarter size portion which came with a side of fries for $8.99. A basket of fried pickles was also ordered for the table as an appetizer.
The fried pickles arrived first. They were served in a red plastic basket lined with a piece of wax paper. A small container of remoulade was nestled in the pickles. The batter was light and the pickles were piping hot. One container of remoulade was not enough, and our waitress brought over a couple of extra containers so we would have enough for all the pickles.
Just as we finished the fried pickles our meals arrived. My sandwich was served in an identical red plastic basket. The muffaletta, unlike any other I have eaten, was served pressed with the meat and cheese warmed through. The sandwich was a bit thin on meat, and the olive tapenade lacked the astringent bite I expected. The fries were of the bagged crinkle cut variety and dusted with Cajun seasoning. I was not impressed by the muffaletta, and if I return to Coosh’s I would order something else. Joe on the other hand really enjoyed his salad which was covered with buffalo chicken, onions and cheddar cheese.

Dang. I was really hoping to find a good muffaletta in my neck of the woods. If you’re trying to make them at home, Fresh Market carries a good olive salad. I don’t press mine, but I do warm them in the oven, especially during the fall and winter. Better luck next time!
Yeah, I was really hoping to find a good one here too. I told my friend from NOLA about the pressing, and she told me it wasn’t a Cuban! The search continues, and yes, making one at home is probably a better idea.
Coosh’s leaves a lot to be desired in general. While I have had a warm muffaletta in New Orleans it is the exception to the rule for good reason. The picture looks more like a fried bologna and cheese. I want to like the place so bad, because I love Cajun food, but twice was enough for me.
Thanks for the comment Matt. I am with you, I really wanted to like Coosh’s but it missed on the most important thing, the food. While the pickles were pretty good the muffaletta fell flat.
Dang, I love a muffaletta. Disappointing that theirs was no good! I think Po’ Boys might even beat that!
It was very disappointing Natalie. I am actually making a muffaletta for this weekend’s tailgate. I’ve never had one from Po’ Boys… I may have to investigate. 🙂
