Ray’s Steel City Saloon

I am terrible keeping up with people and no amount of social media will change  that fact.   The latest example, I thought a friend from was living and working in the Tampa area until he replied to one of my tweets about a food truck event being held outside his office in Tallahassee.  When did you move to Tallahassee I asked? Two years ago was his reply. We decided to meet up for lunch at Ray’s Steel City Saloon to catch up.

Ray’s is located in a former Mexican restaurant across from the largely deserted Tallahassee Mall.  The gray wood sided building is morose looking. Long thin windows face the parking lot while a small covered patio looks over John Knox Road.  A long ramp and a set of stairs climbed to a raised platform where double glass doors led into the interior of the restaurant. For more on Ray’s check out the full review on Tallahassee.com.

  1. Mike, I love your blog for the fact that I get lots of ideas for trying new and new-to-me restaurants in town, but I am so confused by your rating system. Today’s reuben was “pretty good,” but got an A in taste. Last week’s steak at Madison Social “was cooked rare, just as I had ordered and had a very nice flavor,” but got a B+ in taste. What gives?? 🙂

Again, I love your blog but the rating system and the fact that four of the five paragraphs in your reviews usually describe the appearance of the restaurant and food rather than the actual taste confuses me…

    • Thanks for your comment! I appreciate it. The ratings system takes into account all the items on the plate. At Madison Social the steak was ver good. The fries I was served were cold and needed salt. So it averaged out to a B+. Rays sandwich was better than a pretty good, fries were great, and graded against other sandwiches it’s an A. I have thought about adding a tab detailing the rating system, maybe it is time to do so!

About the the blog, I try to give my overall impressions of a place. It’s not just about the food but the experience. Writing just about food isn’t what interest me, its the entire package of going out to eat. Some approach it other ways, but that’s my style.
