Gas Full Service Restaurant

After touring Castillo de San Marco and watching a cannon demonstration we made a pit stop at Gas Full Service Restaurant.  We passed the eatery several times on our way in and out of downtown and excited to stop in for what I hoped would be a relaxing and delicious lunch.

Gas is located at 9 Anastasia Boulevard #C in a building (that I suspect) had an automotive past. Walking through the reflective front door we were immediately greeted.  A bespectacled waitress led us to a bright red topped table surrounded by retro looking aluminum chairs covered in black and white vinyl.  A stop light stood above my head and bright aqua walls offset the concrete floors.  Gas has a fun and funky vibe that was felt in its décor and its friendly owner who came and chatted at our table.

Our drink orders were taken and menus slipped onto the table.  While Becky and the kids looked over their choices I accompanied our waitress behind a low slung wall to a beer tasting area.  I sampled several of their selections before ordering a pint of the Grapefruit Harvest IPA brewed by Abita.

When I returned to the table we placed our order.  For an appetizer we selected the loaded handmade potato chips.  Becky and I each ordered the bacon and blue cheese burger special.  She went for the single while I was talked into the double.  The kids went with their standby, chicken fingers and fries.

The loaded potato chips arrived in a red and white paper lined basket.  Thin waffle cut potato chips were topped with a blue cheese béchamel sauce and covered with a generous sprinkle of green onions and bacon.  The crispness of the chips mixed with the creaminess of the béchamel sauce and saltiness of the bacon was delicious.  By the bottom of the basket not a drop of the toppings or sauce remained.

The burgers arrived next.  The double bacon and blue cheese behemoth towered over the side of fries.  Thick cut bacon, which was perfectly cooked, stuck out between the two cheese covered patties.   Red onion, radicchio, and crinkle cut pickles topped the burger.  Looking over the burger I formulated a plan of attack.  Picking it up in two hands I went in for a bite.  The beef was well seasoned and perfectly cooked to medium rare, just as I had ordered.  The toppings and cheese popped with flavor and complimented the beef.   I am not one to declare anything the best, but the burger at Gas is about the closest I have come to burger nirvana.

Becky enjoyed her meal, and the kids’ chicken fingers were homemade and eagerly consumed by our two little ones.  Gas was a great place for lunch, and was one of the highlights during our vacation.  Gas can be found on Facebook and contacted by telephone at (904) 217-0326.  The restaurant is open Tuesday – Thursday from 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
