One of the most recent additions to the burgeoning Gaines Street corridor is Isabella’s Pizzeria Napoletana.  The restaurant is located at 799 W. Gaines Street and following an engagement photo shoot at Maclay Gardens on one of the hottest days of the year, we made our way downtown for a late lunch.

Walking in the door, we were warmly greeted by the staff and the fire from the brick oven. While trying to decide what to order, Kirsten and I chatted with one of the owners.  He was very amicable and informed us that Isabella’s makes their dough, tomato sauce, cheese (both mozzarella and ricotta), and butter all in-house.  Whatever pizza we selected, he recommended dipping the crust in their butter or garlic butter.

With visions of wood fired pizza dancing in our heads, we selected the Diavola and Bianca e Porri pizza, along with an Isabella’s salad.  We took a seat at one of the long benches gainst the wall, and excitedly waited for our meal to arrive.

The salad appeared first.  A generous pile of spring mix salad greens was topped with green apples, pecans, and blue cheese. Over the top, honey balsamic vinaigrette was drizzled.  The salad had a great combination of both flavors and textures.  The creaminess of the blue cheese paired well with the tart crunchiness of the apples and sweet pecans, and soon nothing but an empty plate remained.
