The Southern Public House recently opened its doors at 224 E. College Avenue in the space formerly occupied by the short-lived Tucker Dukes. Following a busy day at work, Kirsten and I decided to meet our friends Charlie and Kelli for dinner. Since the weather was nice, we decided to sit on their deck.
While we waited for Kelli to arrive we placed an order for two appetizers, the pigs in flannel and the fried green tomatoes. The pigs in flannel arrived first, and were billed as Bradley’s sausage wrapped in puff pastry and served with a side of champagne Dijon mustard. We all agreed the dish was too doughy, as the quartered strip of thin sausage was overpowered by the pastry. The sausage was also cooked to the point it was overly dry, but the Dijon mustard sauce for dipping was fantastic.
Three nicely fried sliced green tomatoes came next. They were topped with crumbled bacon, set upon a bed of fresh arugula, and served with two sauces. The first was pepper jelly, while the second was a peppadew aioli sauce. The tomatoes were perfectly fried and complimented by the two sauces. The Southern nailed this dish, and the fried green tomatoes were the best thing we tasted during our visit. For more on the Southern Public House read the full review on Tallahassee.com.
