Salty Dawg Pub & Deli

The first thing I did on a recent business trip to Philadelphia was drive to E. Passyuck Avenue, and promptly eat two cheese steaks.  One sandwich was from Geno’s and the second was from Pat’s.  Which cheese steak emerged tops in this battle between legends? Pat’s, with cheese wiz, for the win.

Back in Tallahassee, a recent conversation with my friend Albert, a fellow cheese steak aficionado, had me pining for a properly made cheese steak. After disappointing outings to several local sandwich shops, we decided to give the Salty Dawg Pub & Deli a try.

Located in the Winn Dixie plaza at 3813 N. Monroe Street, the Salty Dawg for decades has been a NW Tallahassee fixture. We were seated in a huge wooden booth and looked over the menus while ESPN shone from televisions in the dimly lit bar area. The restaurant specializes in traditional American bar food. Sandwiches, subs, and burgers feature prominently on the menu.  The cheese steak was advertised as steak with a choice of mushrooms, onions, sweet, and hot peppers on a hoagie and topped with white American cheese. We ordered a pair (mine with hot peppers, Albert’s with sweet) along with ten wings (hot).

Service was slow, and it took almost 30 minutes for our sandwiches to arrive. The wait was worth it, as the Salty Dawg has the finest cheese steak in the Capitol City. Thinly sliced pieces of steak were mixed with thin slices of red onion, and stuffed into a warm hoagie, then topped with a generous amount of cheese.  I picked up half the sandwich and took a bite. Tender beef mixed with melted American cheese, and a slightly spicy edge from the peppers made for a magical bite in my mouth.  The bread, which is usually where many sandwiches fail, was good and provided a solid foundation.  Fat from the meat, the all important authentic cheese steak drip, was also present, and a small pool puddled in the wax paper lined basket. 1. Salty is one of our family’s fav spots. It is so close to my house in Runnymede. I’m actually going there tomorrow for dinner and after reading your blog…I think I’ll try the chesse steak.
