Sweet Shoppe

Wandering through downtown Blue Ridge looking for a kid friendly place to eat dinner we ran across the local cupcakery, the Sweet Shoppe.  We decided to see what the shop had to offer, and possibly pick up something for dessert.

The Sweet Shoppe is located at 576 East Main Street in the bottom floor of a stone building.  A sign above the door marked the bakery’s home and the kids raced down the stairs to see who could be first to the glass door.  The interior of the bakery was cozy and felt like a mountain lodge.  A large stone fireplace with deep leather club chairs was located to the right.  Wooden tables with padded chairs provided additional seating.  The walls were painted a deep caramel color.  Rows of cupcakes were displayed in a refrigerated case to the left.  It was a space that made you want to linger over something sweet.

The Sweet Shoppe’s claim to fame is that the owners competed and won Cupcake Wars Season 6 on the Food Network.  I was not aware of this until the friendly clerk behind the counter filled us in on the shop’s history.  Service on our visit was friendly, quick, and attentive.

We made our way to the cupcakes and looked over their desserts.  Seven varieties were offered when we visited and we decided to pick four out for an after dinner treat.  As expected, Miss Julia picked a pink one while Mason, Becky and I all selected our based upon flavors rather than an adherence to a particular color.  The cupcakes were placed in a clear plastic box and a colorful Sweet Shop logo was applied to the top.

Our plan to save the cupcakes until afternoon dinner immediately fell by the wayside as we were lured to a cozy table.  We popped open the box and gave the kids the cupcakes they had selected.  Miss Juliasquealed with delight as Becky handed her the Strawberry Landslide.  It consisted of a chocolate cupcake with a chocolate ganache center, strawberry cream cheese icing and a chocolate drizzle.  She devoured her bright cupcake, but I was able to try a small piece.  The strawberry flavor really popped and went well with the chocolate cake.

Mason selected The King which was banana cake with a cream filling iced with peanut butter butter cream and topped with a chocolate covered banana and a drizzle of honey.  The chocolate covered banana quickly disappeared and he gave us a smile and a big thumbs up as he happily ate the rest of his cupcake.

The Dutch Monkey was picked by Becky and was chocolate banana cake with a cream filling with banana cream cheese frosting, a slice of banana, chocolate chips, and a drizzle of chocolate.  My attempt to snag a bit of Becky’s cupcake was unsuccessful, but she assured me it was delicious.

As for my cupcake, I had a Boston Cream Pie.  A vanilla cupcake was filled with boston cream filling, dipped in chocolate ganache, and dotted with a dollop of vanilla icing.  The cake was dense and moist.  The cream had a nice creamy vanilla flavor.  The chocolate ganache had a rich chocolate flavor and brought the entire cupcake together.  It was delicious and reminded me of Boston Cream pies from back home.

The Sweet Shoppe is open Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., and is closed on Sunday.  The cupcakery can be found online at sweetshopppeblueridge.com, Facebook, and contacted by telephone at (706) 632-6886.
